The Pap SmearIt is suggested that every woman have an routine examination and pap smear annually. A woman should have her first pap smear if she is at least 18 years old or if she has had sexual intercourse and is younger than 18 years of age. The pap smear helps to detect precancerous or cancerous changes of the cervix. It is a screening test: all it does is tell the physician that there may be a problem with the cervix. The physician obtains more accurate information through more elaborate exams if the pap smear is abnormal. Such exams include colposcopy (explained on the Office/Hospital Procedures page) and biopsy of the outer and inner cervix. (A biopsy is removal of a small piece of tissue.)
